A real outdoor kitchen builds around a built-in grill, a work surface on each side, storage below, and (typically) a side burner for pans and sauces. Basic layouts start with a grill, refrigerator, and 24" cabinet in a single run; full setups add a pizza oven, sink with plumbing, ice bin, and bar seating. Match materials to climate — 304 stainless resists salt air, powder-coated steel handles freeze-thaw better inland. Verify cutout dimensions on every appliance before designing the surround; a 1/4" mismatch between grill cutout and island opening means a full rebuild. Gas line size (typically 3/4" for grill + side burner), electrical for lighting/rotisserie, and drainage on wet areas are all easier planned up front than retrofitted.
